The inside story

First impressions matter. As hotel brands seek ways to differentiate themselves to create their own unique space in a competitive marketplace, design and interiors play an important role in improving the guest experience. In this Special Issue, FHW lists out the unique design elements of 10 leading hotels and restaurants in Western India

Hard Rock Cafe, Mumbai

hard-rock-cafe-1The very first Hard Rock Cafe is set inside an unused textile mill building in South Mumbai. The cafe was to dramatically house the trademark Hard Rock Memorabilia while fulfilling the need to respond to the 45-ft-high volume of the shed. Its design and styling sets it apart from other cafes in Mumbai. The design response was inspired primarily by the industrial nature of the site. The challenge was to infuse into this, the Hard Rock brand in new and innovative ways. The internal spaces are segregated into three important zones – café, bar and retail and are further split on various levels. The segregation of these zones was important as the café had to work equally well as an all-day family restaurant, as a high energy bar lounge and as a prime venue for live bands to perform.

The dining zone has been subtly separated from the bar areas by larger than life illuminated canvas graphics of rock stars that move vertically, setting a unique vibe of the place. Two dramatic double height walls clad in a sumptuous streaked purple velvet sport backlit niches of varying sizes house the precious memorabilia that Hard Rock is famous for. The rest of the walls have been rendered in an exposed waxed cement finish. Assorted gilded frames of varying sizes with autographed photos of rock stars, letters, gold albums and other memo decorate the other walls at the cafe.

hard-rock-cafe-3One of the focal points in the design is the bar counter with a one-of-a-kind hydraulic stage over it. The stage can move up and down the vast volume during performances, giving bands the opportunity to interact with their audience from different levels. Inspiration was drawn from the common industrial lifts transporting heavy material in such mill spaces.

If these walls could talk, they would whisper legends of rock and roll heroes and guitar phenomenon. Adorned with set pieces from world-famous musicians like Elvis Presley, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and Led Zeppelin, there’s a doorway to history waiting for you to discover at this place. As Mumbai is a world hub of cultures, music and film, Hard Rock offers a unique insightful experience through its decor and ambience. The interiors suit best for family outings and friends meet ups.

WooBar, the resort’s epicentre of cocktail and party culture, is perched next to the reflection pond, overlooking Vagator Beach. The venue has eclectic decor that reinterprets Goan fishing heritage. Ropes form a ceiling, depicting a boat and fishing net. Bar stools, expansive reclined sofas, and armchairs feature innovative bases embedded with neon lighting supplementing Victorian glass chandeliers.

Another interesting highlight is the 370-square-metre Backyard that offers a unique two-level layout that places a gazebo on the upper tier and pop-up furniture on the lower tier to imitate an amphitheatre setting.

With a new food and cocktail menu, this project houses a special deck for music events, DJ console, workshop cum co-op space and more.

TBSE Lower Parel is designed by Shabnam Gupta, principal designer, The Orange Lane (a design studio that undertakes multiple hospitality and residential projects). Elaborating further, Gupta says, “The idea was to create a green industrial haven with bursts of colour in the midst of the busy, corporate backdrop. Keeping in mind the vibe of the brand TBSE, the design was youthful and edgy with the kavlu wall installation and artwork wall. The blue and white herring bone pattern, cement tiles tied the space together along with yellow pockets of bright upholstery. The cement fabricated tunnel seating is the crowning glory adding to the adventurous and edgy feel to the space. A lot of vertically distributed greens gives the space its freshness and acts like a breather amidst the busy corporate vibe of Kamla Mills. The transparent pitched roof allows a lot of sunlight into the space adding to the green haven feel. The concept was to keep the youth magnet vibe intact, that predominately is a fun and amply vibrant space with a green house effect.”
